You will join a cancer center team that combines deep experience with genuine dedication to patient care. These are colleagues who have chosen to build their careers in Laramie, and their commitment shows in how smoothly the practice operates and how warmly patients speak about their care.
Amy Smith, FNP-BC, Director of the Meredith & Jeannie Ray Cancer Center, serves as both your clinical partner and the operational leader of the cancer center. Amy is a Laramie native who began her nursing career at Ivinson in 2007 and has worked across Med/Surg, PACU, and Oncology before specializing in cancer care. She has directed the cancer center since 2012 and earned her Family Nurse Practitioner board certification in 2023. Amy knows this patient population, this community, and this institution better than anyone. Her experience will prove invaluable as you establish your practice, and her leadership ensures the center runs efficiently. Outside of work, she volunteers with the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame, participates in medical mission work, and runs her own nonprofit, Amy's Kids.
Keith Thompson, MD, Medical Oncology, brings over 32 years of experience treating cancer and blood disorders. Trained at Vanderbilt University with residency and fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, he delivers personalized, compassionate care with a focus on making every patient feel like family. His extensive expertise provides depth to the cancer center's capabilities and offers a collegial resource as you navigate complex cases.
John Purviance, MD, Radiation Oncology, provides radiation oncology services on-site one day per week, ensuring your patients have access to comprehensive cancer treatment without traveling to distant facilities. Trained at Tufts University School of Medicine with residency at New England Medical Center, he is board certified in Radiation Oncology. An avid outdoorsman who enjoys skiing, hiking, and climbing, Dr. Purviance has built his life around the Wyoming lifestyle that draws many physicians to Laramie.
Cara Harshberger, PharmD, Oncology Pharmacist, brings specialized pharmaceutical expertise that changes how you practice. Cara completed her pharmacy training at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a Pharmacy Practice Residency and Specialty Residency in Oncology at NorthShore University HealthSystem. She provides the chemotherapy expertise, drug interaction management, and protocol support that allow you to focus on clinical decision-making while knowing the pharmacy details are handled with precision.
Julie Carlson, MD, Internal Medicine, serves as the physician focused on cancer center follow-up care, handling the ongoing medical needs of patients in survivorship and freeing you to concentrate on active hematology and oncology cases. She is also a hospitalist at Ivinson and a WWAMI assistant clinical professor at the University of Wyoming. Trained at Creighton University, she brings both clinical skill and academic perspective to the team.
This team operates with a collaborative spirit that makes daily work more rewarding. You will not practice in isolation. Questions get answered, coverage gets handled, and patients benefit from a coordinated approach that reflects years of working together toward shared goals.
